Incoming Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II will do what incoming Senator Leila de Lima failed to do during her more than five years in office as Justice Secretary – smoke out the drug lords doing business at the heart of the National Bilibid Prison (NBP).
In an interview with ANC’s Karen Davila, Aguirre said he would start incoming President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs by shaking down the drug lords inside the NBP.
“I’ll begin with the BOC (Bureau of Corrections). The biggest drug lords who are there are able to manufacture drugs inside,” said Aguirre.
Aguirre said despite de Lima’s ritual of making surprise inspections, the drug manufacturing business has endured because the BOC employees have conspired with the drug lords. “If necessary, I will replace all jail guards,” said Aguirre.
Aguirre said Duterte’s broad plan was to toughen up on the prosecution of drug pushers and drug lords. “Respondents in drug cases get off the hook because of some loopholes in the procedure of handling evidence,” said .
Duterte is planning to reimpose the death penalty to cover convicted drug lords and pushers.
